Steam & Oak is the first UK retail partner for FinSteam — bringing this Finnish portable sauna system to British gardens, off-grid escapes, holiday-let setups and connectable sauna-suite installations.
The premium portable sauna tent — connectable, designed as a system, hot in 15
The FinSteam Fritid X is the premium version of the Fritid — same 3-layer engineered insulated fabric, same integrated pop-up frame, same engineered ventilation, in deep matt black with a two-entrance connectable design. The second entrance is the value driver: connect a second Fritid X at the entrances and you have a sauna + changing room / sleep tent / cold-plunge antechamber as a single matched setup. The tent FinSteam build into their NOIR Signature packages, the upgrade if you want the best portable sauna they make, and the only setup on the UK market that lets you scale to a two-tent suite from a single-tent start.
Who buys the Fritid X (and what they were doing before)
- Premium-aesthetic buyers — the sauna is visible in the garden, design matters. The matt black finish reads more upmarket than the standard Fritid's white, and shows the dirt less.
- Buyers who want the upgrade path to a two-tent setup — pitch one Fritid X now, add a second later when budget allows, end up with the XXL Signature setup without re-buying anything. Standard Fritid doesn't connect.
- Holiday let / Airbnb operators positioning at the premium end — guests notice the black premium tent + the matched setup; wellness-amenity properties at this tier book at materially higher nightly rates.
- Couples / families wanting a year-round sauna + dedicated changing space — the second tent (added later or bought together) eliminates the cold-rush every time you go between sauna and home. The single biggest comfort upgrade for UK climate use.
- Athletes / wellness-focused buyers running serious contrast therapy — sauna in one tent, cold plunge in the connected second tent, sheltered from wind and rain.
- Mobile sauna hire / events operators — Fritid X is the tent UK rental operators choose when they want a flagship single-unit setup (the second tent serves as customer changing area). See our mobile sauna hire guide.
- Buyers replacing a tired wood-fired tent from PortaSauna or similar — the Fritid X is the upgrade path to gas-powered, faster, cleaner heat with a real premium feel.
Why a gas pop-up sauna (vs wood-fired or cheap electric)
The UK portable-sauna market is split between two compromises. Wood-fired tents bring a chimney, smoke, ash, a 30-45 minute warm-up, fire-tending mid-session, and the standing fire risk of a live flame in fabric. Cheap electric steam pods are dry, lightweight, frequently unrated for safety, and tied to a wall socket. The FinSteam Fritid X is the third path: gas-powered, no electricity, no chimney, no live fire, no plastic-pod feel — engineered as a sauna from the start.
| FinSteam Fritid X (gas) | Wood-fired tent | Electric steam pod | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heat-up time | ~15 min, turn a dial | 30-45 min, tend a fire | 30-60 min |
| Power needed | Propane bottle | Firewood | Mains wall socket |
| Chimney | None | Required | None |
| Smoke, ash, soot | None | Yes, every session | None |
| Authentic löyly | Yes — naturally humid | Yes | No — artificial steam |
| Off-grid | Yes | Yes | No |
| Safety certification | EU Type-Examination Certificate | None (open flame) | Usually none |
| Premium finish | Matt black, two-entrance | Usually canvas / military feel | Plastic pod |
| Connectable to second tent | Yes — Fritid X to Fritid X | No | No |
A clever piece of engineering — tent and heater as a single certified system
FinSteam designed the Fritid X and the gas heater as a matched, certified system. Vent openings sized to match the heater's airflow, fabric specified to handle combustion warmth, dimensions matched to the heater's working range — the whole configuration certified together under EU Regulation 2016/426. You don't add ventilation, modify the tent, or specify a base. The heater inside has an Oxygen Depletion Sensor (ODS) that shuts the gas off at approximately 18% oxygen, and flame monitoring that cuts the gas instantly if the flame is lost. AENOR-tested. FinSteam's stated claim: this is the only CE-marked, electricity-free sauna gas heater on the European market. Zero warranty returns on the heater in the last 12 months.
What's in the Fritid X — every piece explained
1. The 3-layer engineered insulated fabric (premium black finish)
Identical construction to the standard Fritid, finished in deep matt black:
- Outer layer: 100% Oxford 420D polyester with waterproof coating, premium matt black. Handles rain, snow, high-humidity environments. Waterproof rating: 2000 mm water column.
- Middle layer: 100% polyester fibre fill, 150 g/m² — the thermal insulation that actually retains the sauna heat between rounds.
- Inner layer: 100% Oxford 210D polyester with smooth heat-retaining inner face. Reflects heat back toward the occupants and doesn't trap moisture against the fabric (preventing mildew over time).
The black finish is more than just aesthetic — it shows dirt less than the white standard Fritid, which matters if the tent is going to be a permanent presence in a garden or used in muddier outdoor conditions (festivals, mountain trips, off-grid use).
2. The integrated pop-up frame
The frame is part of the tent — not separate poles you assemble. Setup in under a minute, no tools, no loose pieces, no diagrams. Same construction as the standard Fritid.
3. Two-entrance connectable design (the value driver vs the standard Fritid)
This is the single biggest reason to choose the Fritid X over the standard white Fritid. The Fritid X has two entrances built in:
- One entrance serves as the standard sauna door — the way you'd use a single-tent setup.
- The second entrance is engineered to butt directly to the matching entrance on a second Fritid X tent, creating a single shared opening between two interiors. Fast to assemble, no separate tunnel piece, both interiors seal at the connection (no draft, no heat loss).
When the second entrance isn't in use (i.e. you're running the Fritid X as a single tent), it seals fully — heat retention is identical to the standard Fritid.
What the second tent (added later or bought together) unlocks:
- Sauna + changing room — get changed in the warm. The single biggest UK-climate comfort upgrade. Year-round use becomes effortless.
- Sauna + cold-plunge antechamber — your Steam & Oak cold plunge tub lives in the second tent, sheltered from wind and rain. Contrast therapy done properly, weather-independent.
- Sauna + sleep tent — for off-grid trips, wild swimming weekends, glamping rotation.
- Sauna + commercial waiting area — for events / pop-ups / mobile sauna hire running paid sessions, the second tent is where customers change and wait.
You can buy a second Fritid X standalone later (~£895) and end up with the same setup as the NOIR XXL Signature package — buying once and adding later is supported, no special connector kit needed.
4. Engineered ventilation openings (designed for the FinSteam heater)
FinSteam are explicit that most sauna tents on the market do NOT meet the ventilation and safety standards needed to run their gas heater. The Fritid X's vent openings are sized and positioned to match the FinSteam 8.1 kW heater's airflow exactly. You don't add ventilation, modify the tent, or design any safety provision — FinSteam have done that work and the certification under EU Regulation 2016/426 covers the tent + heater as a single system. Do not run other heaters in this tent and do not run the FinSteam heater in other tents — the paired engineering is the safety case.
5. Dimensions and footprint
- Floor: 180 × 180 cm. Identical to standard Fritid.
- Height: 180 cm at the sides, 207 cm at the centre.
- Required setup space (single tent, including guy lines): 240 × 240 × 220 cm.
- Required setup space (two tents connected): approximately 240 × 480 × 220 cm — plan for ~5 metres of garden length.
- Internal volume: 8 m³ per tent — sized for 2 to 4 people comfortably per tent.
- Weight (tent only): 15 kg. Packs down to a carry-bag.
The Fritid X is the tent in every NOIR package
If you've been comparing NOIR packages and wondering what the tent commonality is — it's this. Every NOIR package (M Advanced, L Elite, XL Signature, XXL Signature) is built around the Fritid X. The NOIR XXL specifically includes two Fritid X tents — the matched two-tent setup, complete in one delivery.
- NOIR M Advanced (£3,495) — Fritid X + Botnia 81 R14 + Poppel 1400 + 40 kg stones + UK gas kit.
- NOIR L Elite (£3,995) — Fritid X + Aurora 81 R14 + Poppel 1600 + 40 kg stones + UK gas kit.
- NOIR XL Signature (£4,495) — Fritid X + Aurora 81 R14S + Poppel 1800 + 40 kg stones + UK gas kit.
- NOIR XXL Signature (£5,495) — 2× Fritid X + Aurora 81 R14S + Poppel 1800 + 40 kg stones + UK gas kit.
Most Fritid X buyers eventually end up at the package equivalent — if you know which configuration you want, look at NOIR pricing vs piecing it together.
Made in Finland. Designed as a system. Backed by a track record.
The Fritid X is manufactured to FinSteam's spec — same engineered 3-layer fabric construction. The heater that runs inside is manufactured in Finland by FinSteam Ab Oy, all components sourced from Europe. Spare parts ship direct from the FinSteam factory. As the official first UK retail partner, Steam & Oak holds UK stock, handles UK service, and gives you a real phone number when something needs attention. Zero warranty returns on the heater in the last 12 months.
Portable by default. Gas Safe registered only if you fix the heater down.
The Fritid X is portable — pitch, sauna, pack down. The heater inside runs as a portable LPG appliance with a UK propane bottle outside, regulator and CE-marked hose, treated like a patio heater. Used this way, you do not need a Gas Safe registered engineer. If you choose to anchor or build the heater into a permanent structure later, UK regulations require a Gas Safe registered engineer for the gas connection.
The full picture — what you'll need on top of the tent
The Fritid X tent on its own doesn't make you a sauna — you also need the heater, the gas kit, the stones, and a propane bottle. For UK buyers, plan for:
- A FinSteam gas heater — typically the premium Aurora 81 (R11S or R14S configurations are typical pairings with the Fritid X's premium positioning). The Botnia 81 also works if you're prioritising value.
- UK propane regulator + 1.2 m CE-marked hose kit (I3P 37 mbar, 27 mm clip-on for Calor 13 kg bottles) — our UK gas kit.
- 40 kg sauna stones — sized for the Orbis cage. Sold standalone.
- Poppel sauna bench — the Poppel 1400 or 1600 fits the Fritid X footprint.
- Standard UK 13 kg Calor propane bottle — bought locally.
- Non-combustible base for the heater (≥30 mm thick, ≥300 × 300 mm) — concrete slab or stone tile, sourced locally.
- (Optional) a second Fritid X tent if you're going for the two-tent setup — or buy the NOIR XXL Signature outright.
If you want all of this in one delivery instead of sourcing five suppliers, look at the NOIR L Elite package (£3,995, single Fritid X) or the NOIR XXL Signature package (£5,495, two Fritid X tents).

FAQs
What's the actual difference between the Fritid and the Fritid X?
Three things: the X is matt black instead of white, has two entrances instead of one (the second is connectable to a second Fritid X), and is the tent FinSteam build into all four NOIR packages. Fabric construction, insulation, dimensions, heater compatibility, ventilation engineering are identical.
How do two Fritid X tents connect together — does it leave a draft / cold gap?
No. The two entrances are designed to butt directly together, creating a single shared opening between the two interiors. Both tents seal at the connection. Heat retention in the sauna tent is identical to a standalone Fritid X. The connection is built-in — no separate tunnel piece needed, no fiddly assembly. Pitch both tents, line up the connecting entrances, fasten — done.
Do I need two tents?
No — most owners start with one and add a second later. The Fritid X works perfectly as a standalone portable sauna for 2-4 people. Both entrances seal fully when only one tent is pitched. The second entrance simply opens the upgrade path later, with no special connector kit required.
Is it safe to run a gas heater inside the Fritid X?
Yes — and the safety case is engineered. The Fritid X ships with the ventilation already designed-in to match the FinSteam heater's airflow, the combination certified together under EU Regulation 2016/426. The heater itself has an ODS auto-shutoff at approximately 18% oxygen, and flame monitoring. Standard residential CO alarms aren't designed for sauna conditions — the ODS is the engineered safety solution.
Do I need a Gas Safe engineer?
No, not for portable use. Yes if you choose to fix the heater into a permanent structure.
How long does the tent take to pitch and the sauna to heat up?
Pitch in under a minute (integrated frame, no tools). Heat from cold to 70-75°C in 15-20 minutes with the FinSteam heater. Adding the second connected tent adds 2-3 minutes of setup.
Can I use it in winter, and does it work in the UK climate?
Yes — year-round use is exactly what it's designed for. The 3-layer insulation plus the 15-minute heat-up means UK winter is a non-issue. The 2000 mm waterproof rating handles rain and snow. The two-tent setup is especially good in winter because you get changed in the warm of the second tent.
Is the Fritid X good for commercial / mobile sauna hire use?
Yes — it's the configuration most UK mobile sauna hire operators choose for a flagship single-unit setup. The second tent doubles as customer changing area, which is the difference between a sauna-as-a-novelty offer and a sauna-as-a-real-amenity offer at events. See our mobile sauna hire guide for the commercial case.
