Real Finnish heat: water on the stones, löyly, the lot. And the curved form is efficient — there's less air volume to heat than a square cabin of the same seating, so a barrel warms quickly (typically around 30–40 minutes from cold) and runs economically.

Why a barrel
The curved shape is functional, not just a look: less air volume to heat means faster warm-up and lower running cost than a square cabin of the same capacity, and the rounded top sheds rain without a complex roof. The trade-off is a little less headroom and bench area than a cube or cabin of the same external footprint. Spruce or thermowood?
Most of the Saaren range offers both. Nordic spruce is the value option and perfectly good if you treat it every couple of years. Thermowood is heat-treated rather than chemically preserved, absorbs 40–50% less moisture and moves far less — which matters most on a large or exposed barrel, where there is a lot of timber to shift through a wet British winter. How much does a barrel sauna cost?
From £3,890 for a Rustic 2-person complete with a heater, up to around £11,099 for a large premium ThermoWood barrel. Most quality 4-person barrels are £4,000–£6,500. Several models are also sold as a cabin only from £3,695 if you are sourcing your own heater. Budget separately for a base.
How long does a barrel sauna take to heat up?
A barrel's efficient curved shape means it heats relatively quickly — typically around 30–40 minutes from cold, faster than a larger square cabin.
Are barrel saunas electric or wood-fired?
Both, and many are gas-ready. Electric is the most convenient (needs a garden supply); wood-fired needs no electrics; off-grid propane suits a sauna at the far end of a garden with no power. Every Saaren barrel offers a choice of all three.
What size barrel sauna do I need?
A 2.5m barrel seats 2–4 comfortably; 2.8m to 3.3m suits 4–5; a 4m barrel takes 6 with room for a changing area. Bench length is what limits how many can lie down, so if you want to stretch out rather than sit, size up.
How do you maintain a barrel sauna?
Light maintenance: keep the base level and draining, check and tighten the steel bands occasionally as the timber settles, and replace the stones periodically. See the barrel guide for detail.
