Collection: Gas Sauna Heaters

Gas Sauna Heaters — Off-Grid Propane

A gas sauna heater runs on a standard propane bottle — the same sort you would use for a patio heater or a barbecue. No armoured cable, no trench across the lawn, no consumer-unit work, and no electrician's quote you had not budgeted for.

For a sauna at the far end of a garden, that is frequently the difference between a project that happens and one that stalls. Running a dedicated supply out to a garden building commonly costs £400–£1,200. A gas heater removes that line from the budget entirely.

Steam & Oak is the first UK retail partner for FinSteam, and these are the heaters we fit across our own gas-ready cabins.

Botnia 81 or Aurora 81?

Both are 8.1 kW and both do the same job. The Aurora is the premium version — better finish and detailing. Output, stone capacity and suitability are identical, so it is genuinely a question of how much you care about how it looks.

What the R-codes mean

R11 / R14 Heater plus the Orbis stone cage. Orbis 11 takes 20–25 kg of stones; Orbis 14 takes 25 kg+ and suits larger rooms.
R11S / R14S The same, plus the safety pack — Njord heat shield and Halo guard rail.

The Njord heat shield cuts the required clearance to combustible timber from 200 mm to 50 mm at the sides. In a compact cabin that is often the difference between the heater fitting comfortably and not fitting at all. The Halo rail stops anyone brushing against the hot stone cage.

If you have children, guests, or you are renting the sauna out, take the safety pack.

Fitting

Gas heaters need a flue. Where we supply the sauna as well, we cut the flue and commission the heater on installation day — you do not need to arrange anything separately. If you are retrofitting to an existing cabin, talk to us first: flue routing and clearances need checking before anything is ordered.

Gas sauna heater FAQs

Are gas sauna heaters safe?

Yes, when correctly installed and ventilated. They are certified appliances with flame-failure protection, flued to the outside like any gas appliance. The detail that matters is clearance to combustible timber and adequate ventilation — which is why we commission them rather than leaving it to chance. See our full safety guide.

How long does a propane bottle last?

A standard 13 kg bottle gives roughly 15–25 sessions depending on cabin size, how long you run it and outside temperature. Read more on running costs and bottles.

Can I fit one to a sauna I already own?

Often yes, but not always — it depends on the cabin construction and whether a flue can be routed cleanly. Heavily insulated roofs are the usual obstacle. Send us photographs and we will tell you honestly.

Which size do I need?

8.1 kW suits rooms up to roughly 12 m³. Above that you need twin heaters or a larger unit — ask us, and note there is a larger single FinSteam heater expected later this year.
