Gas vs electric vs wood
Electric saunas tie you to the mains and an electrician and give a dry heat until you ladle water on. Wood-fired saunas mean splitting logs, tending a fire, smoke and a chimney. A gas sauna is the only option that is instant, off-grid, smoke-free and naturally humid. How does a gas sauna work?
A FinSteam gas heater burns propane to heat a cage of sauna stones, exactly like an electric heater warms its elements — but with no mains power. Because the burner is flueless, the small amount of water vapour from combustion stays in the cabin, giving a naturally humid heat. You still ladle water on the stones for full löyly. It reaches a true Finnish 70–75 °C in around 15 minutes.
Do you need electricity for a gas sauna?
No. That's the whole point — a gas sauna runs entirely off a standard propane bottle, with no mains supply, no dedicated circuit and no electrician. It works anywhere in the garden and keeps working in a power cut.
Are gas saunas safe?
Yes, when used as designed. FinSteam heaters carry an EU Type-Examination Certificate under the Gas Appliance Regulation (2016/426) and include an automatic Oxygen Depletion Sensor (ODS) that shuts the gas off if ventilation ever drops, plus flame monitoring. They're built for ventilated outdoor use; always follow the supplied ventilation and clearance guidance.
How much does a gas sauna cost?
The portable tents start at £795 for the 2–4 person Fritid, with the connectable Fritid X at £895 and the 10–14 person Dome at £1,795. How long does a gas sauna take to heat up?
About 15 minutes to reach 70–75 °C — much faster than a wood fire or a slow electric pre-heat, because the 8.1 kW burner brings the stones up quickly.
How much gas does a gas sauna use?

Can you use a gas sauna indoors?
FinSteam gas saunas are designed for outdoor or very well-ventilated spaces, not sealed indoor rooms. The ODS is a safety backstop, not a licence to use one in an unventilated space — always follow the ventilation requirements in the manual.
