The complete FinSteam sauna, delivered to your garden in one buy
NOIR M Advanced is the most affordable way into a real Finnish gas sauna. Premium black tent, certified gas heater, solid wood bench, 40 kg of sauna stones, and the UK gas regulator and hose to light it — delivered in one consignment, ready to use the day it arrives. Pitched in under a minute, hot in 15, comfortable for 2 to 4 people. No electrician, no chimney, no consumer-unit upgrade, no fire to tend.
Why a gas sauna at all (and why it beats wood-fired or electric)
The UK portable-sauna market is split between two compromises. Wood-fired tents — the dominant alternative — bring a chimney to fit through the roof, smoke and ash to clean up, a 30-45 minute warm-up time, fire-tending mid-session, and the standing fire risk of a live flame in fabric. Cheap electric steam pods from Amazon and big-box retailers are dry, lightweight, frequently unrated for safety, and tied to a wall socket so they don't work where the mains can't reach. The FinSteam NOIR is the third path: gas-powered, no electricity, no chimney, no live fire, no plastic-pod feel — engineered as a sauna from the start.
| NOIR (gas) | Wood-fired | Electric | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heat-up time | ~15 minutes, turn a dial | 30-45 minutes, tend a fire | 30-60 minutes |
| Power needed | Propane bottle | Firewood | Mains — often a dedicated 32A circuit |
| Electrician / wiring | None | None | Usually required (£1-2k) |
| Chimney | None | Required | None |
| Smoke, ash, soot | None | Yes, every session | None |
| Humidity | Naturally humid (combustion vapour stays in the cabin) | Dry until you ladle | Dry until you ladle |
| Off-grid | Yes | Yes | No |
| Control | Dial | The fire decides | Thermostat / timer |
| Safety | EU-certified, auto oxygen shut-off | Open flame | Electrical |
A clever piece of engineering — the certified safety case
Running gas safely inside a small, enclosed, oxygen-hungry space is genuinely hard — which is why most "gas saunas" you see online aren't certified for it. FinSteam solved it with patented burner technology delivering clean, stable combustion, wrapped in two layers of automatic safety. The Oxygen Depletion Sensor (ODS) continuously monitors the oxygen level inside the sauna and automatically shuts off the gas if it drops to approximately 18% — well above any level dangerous to occupants. Flame monitoring cuts the gas instantly if the flame is lost for any reason. FinSteam's stated claim: this is the only CE-marked, electricity-free sauna gas heater on the European market. AENOR-tested under EU Gas Appliance Regulation 2016/426. Across the last 12 months, FinSteam record zero warranty returns on the heater.
What's in the M Advanced package — every piece explained
1. FinSteam Fritid X premium black sauna tent
The premium version of FinSteam's portable sauna tent system, in deep matt black with a two-entrance connectable design. Crucially, the tent and the heater are designed and manufactured as a single safety-engineered system — vent openings sized to match the heater's airflow, fabric specified to handle combustion warmth, and the whole configuration certified together. You don't add ventilation, you don't modify the tent, you don't specify a base — FinSteam have done that work and the result is on the EU certificate.
- Floor: 180 × 180 cm. Height: 180 cm at the sides, 207 cm at the centre.
- Internal volume: 8 m³ — sized for 2 to 4 people comfortably.
- Required pitching space: 240 × 240 × 220 cm.
- Setup time: under a minute. Integrated pop-up frame, no tools, no loose poles.
- Fabric: 3-layer engineered insulated construction. Outer 100% Oxford 420D polyester with waterproof coating (2000 mm rating — rain, snow, high humidity). Middle 150 g/m² polyester fibre fill for thermal insulation. Inner 100% Oxford 210D polyester with smooth heat-retaining inner face.
- Vent openings sized and positioned for the FinSteam heater's airflow. FinSteam are explicit that most sauna tents on the market do NOT meet the ventilation and safety standards needed to run their heater — the Fritid X is engineered around it from day one.
- Two entrances — one for the sauna door, second is built-in and sealed when not in use. (The second entrance is connectable to a second Fritid X — that's the upgrade path to NOIR XXL.)
2. FinSteam Botnia 81 R14 gas sauna heater
The original FinSteam workhorse — the 8.1 kW gas heater that started the brand. Heating performance is identical to the Aurora 81 in the higher NOIR tiers — same chassis, same patented burner, same certifications, same 15-minute heat-up. The Aurora differs by design language, not by power or safety. Pick the M if you want certified FinSteam heat at the lowest price point in the range.
- Power: 8.1 kW.
- Gas: UK propane (I3P 37 mbar). The included regulator + hose ships pre-configured for this.
- Gas consumption: 0.6 kg/h at full output. A standard UK 13 kg propane bottle runs the heater at full output for around 20 hours; in practice you throttle back once at temperature, so real-world bottle life is longer.
- Heat-up: 15-20 minutes from cold to 70-75°C in normal UK conditions.
- Dimensions: 61 × 51 × 30 cm. Weight: ~9.8 kg.
- Sauna size range: 4-12 m³ insulated. The Fritid X is 8 m³ — sits right in the middle of the Botnia's design range.
- Includes the Orbis 14 stone cage fitted to the heater. 20-25 kg+ stone capacity for proper löyly response.
- Certification: EU Type-Examination Certificate, AENOR-tested under Gas Appliance Regulation 2016/426. ODS + flame monitoring as covered above.
3. Poppel 1400 sauna bench
Spanish-made solid poplar wood. Poplar is the traditional sauna-bench wood for a reason: lightweight, stays cool to the touch even when the sauna is hot, naturally low resin so it doesn't bleed sap onto your skin. Made in Spain by FinSteam's bench supplier to dimensions that match the tent system.
- 1400 mm length — fits one bench comfortably across the Fritid X interior, sized for 2-3 people seated.
- Solid wood construction, no veneers, no panel-board.
- Sized to the tent — drops into place without adjustment.
- Suitable for fixed cabin installs too — the geometry is standard sauna bench.
4. 40 kg pre-washed FinSteam sauna stones
Sauna stones aren't all the same. These are sized to fit the Orbis 14 cage — most other stones either rattle around or don't pack enough thermal mass for proper löyly response. 40 kg is the right quantity to give the cage proper thermal density: ladle water on, the stones hiss and release a real steam burst, not the underwhelming puff you get from skimped stone loads.
- Pre-washed and ready to load.
- First use: burn off outdoors or with the sauna open (normal new-stone procedure — releases packaging smell once, then it's gone).
- Replace every 2-3 years of heavy use as they crack from thermal cycling. 40 kg lasts most domestic users 3-5 years.
5. UK propane regulator + 1.2 m CE-marked gas hose
The bit that's missing from FinSteam's standard heater shipment by design — they don't ship country-specific gas fittings, so without this kit you'd be sourcing a regulator separately from a UK gas merchant. Steam & Oak include it with every NOIR package so you can light the heater on the day stock lands.
- UK propane regulator, I3P 37 mbar — the FinSteam-specified pressure for propane operation.
- 27 mm clip-on connector — fits standard UK Calor 13 kg propane bottles (the most common UK domestic propane bottle, available from BBQ / camping / petrol-station retailers).
- CE-marked gas hose, internal Ø ≥ 9 mm, 1.2 m length — to the FinSteam-specified hose spec.
- For commercial / hire use with larger propane bottles (POL screw connector, 19-47 kg cylinders), get in touch before ordering — we'll spec the right kit.
Made in Finland. Designed as a system. Backed by a track record.
Every component above is FinSteam-engineered and matched. The heater is manufactured in Finland by FinSteam Ab Oy with all components sourced from Europe — not a re-badge of an Asian import. Spare parts ship direct from the FinSteam factory. As the official first UK retail partner, Steam & Oak holds UK stock, handles UK service and warranty work, and gives you a real phone number when something needs attention.
Portable by default. Gas Safe registered if you fix it down.
The heater ships as a portable LPG appliance. You connect a UK propane bottle outside via the included 37 mbar regulator and CE-marked hose — set up like a patio heater or a BBQ. Used this way, you do not need a Gas Safe registered engineer. If you choose to permanently fix or build the heater into a fixed structure (a wooden cabin, a barrel sauna, anything anchored), UK regulations require the gas connection to be made by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Either path is supported by FinSteam's installation specifications.
Why pick M Advanced (vs upgrading)
M is the entry tier. Heating performance is identical to every other NOIR package — same 8.1 kW, same 15-minute heat-up, same Finnish löyly. The differences as you climb:
- NOIR L Elite (£3,995) — upgrades the heater from the original Botnia to the newer Aurora (premium design language, broader sauna-type compatibility), and the bench from 1400 to 1600 mm.
- NOIR XL Signature (£4,495) — adds the Aurora R14S safety pack (Halo safety rail + Njord heat shield included as standard), and the bench to 1800 mm. Recommended for families with kids and any commercial / hire use.
- NOIR XXL Signature (£5,495) — adds a second Fritid X tent (sauna + connectable changing room / sleep tent / cold-plunge antechamber), keeps the R14S safety pack and Poppel 1800.
Pick M if budget matters more than the Aurora design upgrade and you're not in one of the scenarios where the safety pack is essential. M's components are all genuine, FinSteam-engineered, certified — you're not buying a lesser product, you're buying the entry configuration.
Who it's for
- Couples or small families wanting a real Finnish sauna at the most accessible price.
- First-time gas sauna buyers — the simplest complete-package decision in the range.
- Holiday lets adding a wellness amenity without a build project.
- Anyone whose garden doesn't have a spare 32-amp circuit for an electric sauna and who doesn't want to deal with wood smoke.
Not included
- Propane bottle — buy a standard UK 13 kg Calor propane locally. The regulator + hose in the package connects to one.
- Non-combustible base for the heater (≥30 mm thick, ≥300 × 300 mm stone or concrete slab) — sourced locally per the FinSteam install spec.
FAQs
Why this much cheaper than the L Elite — what's the catch?
No catch. M ships with the original Botnia 81 heater instead of the newer Aurora 81. Both heaters share the same 8.1 kW chassis, same patented burner, same ODS + flame monitoring, same certifications, same heat-up time and same löyly response. The Aurora is the newer design with a more refined finish. You pay the £500 step from M to L for the design language, not for performance.
Is the M still safe for family use with kids?
Yes. The heater's ODS auto-shutoff + flame monitoring + certification are identical to every higher NOIR tier. If you'd like the physical safety rail around the heater top (the Halo), it's available standalone for ~£249 or included as standard in NOIR XL / XXL.
How long does the package take to arrive?
Free UK delivery, stock-dependent. Lead time shown above the buy button. Pre-orders ship in order received — first UK allocation is genuinely limited.
Do I need a Gas Safe engineer to install this?
Not for portable use. The heater runs as a portable LPG appliance — connected outside via the included regulator and hose like a patio heater. You only need a Gas Safe registered engineer if you choose to fix or build the heater into a permanent structure.
What ventilation does the tent need?
None that you have to set up. The Fritid X ships with the ventilation already engineered-in by FinSteam — vents are sized and positioned to match the heater's airflow and the combination is certified together.
Can I upgrade later to a bigger package?
Yes — every component is standalone-available. If you start with M and later decide you want the safety pack (Halo + Njord) you can add them as accessories. If you want the second Fritid X tent (NOIR XXL configuration), buy a second Fritid X standalone and connect them at the entrances.
