The real cost to your first sauna — gas vs electric
An electric sauna's shelf price isn't the price to your first löyly. A 6.8–9 kW electric heater needs its own dedicated circuit, wired by a qualified electrician and signed off under Part P — typically £800–£1,500, plus the wait to get one booked. The FinSteam gas heater connects to a UK propane bottle outside, like a patio heater: no dedicated circuit, no electrician for portable use, and it's hot on the day it arrives.
| Electric (from) | Gas (FinSteam) | |
|---|---|---|
| Cabin + heater | £5,795 | £7,790 |
| Electrician — dedicated circuit + Part P | £800–£1,500 | £0 |
| Ready to use | After wiring is booked + signed off | Day of delivery |
| Real total | £6,595–£7,295 | £7,790 |
The ~£2,000 gap on the shelf narrows to roughly £500–£1,200 once the electrician is in the sum — and the gas sauna doesn't wait on a sparky's diary. (Portable use needs no Gas Safe engineer; a fixed install does. A standard UK 13 kg Calor propane bottle runs the heater for a dozen-plus sessions.)
What "gas-ready" means — engineered vents built into the cabin
The gas variant ships with wooden louvre vents at the FinSteam-specified sizes built in: intake ≥350 cm² low next to the heater (fresh air from outside), exhaust ≥250 cm² high in the opposite corner (discharged to outside). FinSteam exclude plastic disc / twist valves. Vent + heater certified together under EU Reg 2016/426. Electric/wood-fired variants ship with the appropriate vent set for that heat type.

The choice (heater options)
- ★ + FinSteam Aurora 81 R14S Gas Heater (UK first) — the new gas option. Details above.
- Shell only — buy the cabin, source your own heater.
- + Electric Harvia PC70 6.8kW — sized for the interior, single-phase ~25A circuit.
- + Electric Harvia PC90 9kW — for faster heat-up.
- + Wood-Fired Etna 12 stove + flue kit — traditional log-fired ritual.
The double-shelf upgrade of the 2.4m cube — same external 2.35m cube + 0.4m porch + same 44mm Scandinavian spruce shell, but with a two-tier bench configuration inside. Two height levels means four adults can sit + recline properly during a shared session rather than packed elbow-to-elbow.
Running cost + warm-up
Gas (Aurora R14S): ~£1.50-£2.00 per session, 15-20 min heat-up. Electric (Harvia 6.8kW): £1.75-£2.25 per 90-min session, 30 min heat-up. Electric 9kW: £2.00-£2.50 per session. Wood (Etna 12): £2-£4 hardwood logs. See our full running-cost breakdown.
Why pay £500 more for the double-shelf bench
In a 4-person sauna, single-level benches mean people sit shoulder-to-shoulder at one height — fine for a couple, cramped for 4 adults. The double-shelf gives a lower bench (cooler, for kids or heat-sensitive users) + an upper bench (hotter, where the löyly steam concentrates). Same external size as the standard 2.4m cube but a substantially different bathing experience for shared sessions.
Built from solid, slow-grown Scandinavian spruce
This cabin is built the traditional way, from solid 44mm slow-grown Scandinavian spruce. The wall is the structure, not a thin cladding over a hidden frame, so what you see and sit against is the building itself. We use slow-grown timber on purpose: slow growth in a cold northern climate lays down tight, dense growth rings, which makes the wood stronger, more stable and more naturally resistant than fast-grown softwood, and lets it machine to a precise joint that stays tight. At 44mm this is a thicker solid wall than most barrels on the market, and that timber mass stores heat and gives it back evenly, for a steady, enveloping warmth rather than a heat that drops away the moment the door opens. There is no cavity to trap damp and no hidden insulation to fail, so it is as robust as it is simple. A sauna is roofed and driven hot and dry every session, which keeps rot at bay far better than the weather ever tests it, so this spruce makes a long-lived cabin that takes an oil or a colour beautifully. Prefer a darker, ultra-stable exterior, or the lowest possible winter running cost? We can supply thermowood or a fully insulated cabin too. See Thermowood vs Slow-Grown Spruce for the full comparison.
