The Chimney Tax: How Much of Your Firewood's Heat Never Reaches the Sauna

An independent FINAS-accredited energy laboratory tested seven wood-fired sauna heaters and found something that changes how wood-sauna owners should think about heat. Between 28 and 43 per cent of all the heat those stoves generate escapes straight up the chimney—pure waste. That's before you account for what's lost through the sauna structure itself. Open fireplaces are far worse: 80 to 90 per cent of their heat vanishes up the flue. Even the best traditional wood stoves still lose 20 to 40 per cent. For anyone burning firewood week after week, that missing heat is a labour and cost problem. Every log you split, stack, dry, and carry into the sauna is working at three-quarter efficiency at best. The alternative—a flueless gas sauna heater—keeps virtually all combustion heat inside the sauna, because there's no chimney to pull warm air away.
