What it's like to run — the honest version

This is where wood-fired saunas win hearts and lose patience, in equal measure.

  • Heat-up: 30–45 minutes of building and tending the fire before anyone gets warm. For some people that ritual is the entire point. For others it's why the sauna stops getting used by November.
  • Fuel: you'll need dry, seasoned or kiln-dried logs — bought, stored under cover, and carried down the garden. Expect roughly £2–£2.50 in logs per session.
  • After each session: ash to clear. Periodically: the flue needs sweeping like any wood burner.
  • The heat itself: superb. A wood stove heats the stones hard, the löyly is generous, and the faint woodsmoke note is something no other heater gives you.

The rules: chimneys and smoke control areas

Two things to check before you buy, not after:

2. Smoke control areas. Most large UK towns and cities are smoke control areas, which restrict what you can burn and in what appliance. If you're urban, check your council before committing to any wood burner — it's the single most common reason a wood-fired sauna plan falls through.
