Propane for Saunas: Bottles, Regulators, Runtime, and UK Pricing (2026)

Propane (LPG) is a simple, predictable fuel for saunas: liquid gas in a bottle, regulator to reduce pressure, hose to heater. Cost is stable (~£2.50–£3.50 per kg in the UK, July 2026), supply is widespread (supermarkets, online, local suppliers), and bottles last 2–3 months at weekly use. This guide covers bottle sizes, regulator types, how to calculate runtime, and how to swap empty bottles.

Propane bottle sizes and typical availability

The most common domestic propane bottles in the UK:

Size Weight Typical Cost Runtime at 8.1 kW (FinSteam Aurora) Availability
6 kg (portable) ~7 kg filled £20–£25 (exchange) ~8–10 hours (full power) Wide (supermarkets, DIY, online)
11 kg (standard) ~13 kg filled £30–£40 (exchange) ~14–18 hours (full power) Reliable (bottled-gas companies, online)
13 kg (economy) ~15 kg filled £25–£35 (exchange) ~17–22 hours (full power) Reliable (major suppliers: BOC, Calor, Flogas)
19 kg (large) ~21 kg filled £40–£50 (exchange) ~25–30 hours (full power) Less common; available from specialist suppliers

Real-world choice: Most UK sauna owners use an 11 kg or 13 kg bottle. At 3 sauna sessions per week (45 minutes each), a 13 kg bottle lasts roughly 8–9 weeks. With mid-power usage (50% throttle after heat-up), a bottle lasts 10–12 weeks. The 6 kg portable is useful for holidays or guests; the 19 kg is overkill unless you're running multiple saunas or commercial operations.

Propane regulators and pressure

A regulator takes high-pressure gas from the bottle (~5–10 bar in the bottle) and reduces it to a safe working pressure for the sauna heater (typically 2.5 mbar for domestic LPG appliances in the UK).

Types of regulator:

  • Two-stage regulator (most common): First stage reduces bottle pressure to ~0.5–1 bar. Second stage reduces to ~2.5 mbar. Provides stable pressure even as the bottle empties. FinSteam supply a two-stage regulator in their kits. Cost: £45–£70 standalone.
  • Single-stage regulator (cheaper, less stable): Reduces directly to working pressure. Pressure drifts slightly as the bottle empties; flow rate changes. Cost: £20–£30. Not recommended for sauna heaters.

UK domestic LPG is standardized to 2.5 mbar working pressure (BS 5482). Your sauna heater is calibrated for this. A two-stage regulator keeps this pressure constant, which means consistent flame and heat output.

Important: Propane bottle valves in the UK are left-handed threads. Turn the regulator clockwise to screw onto the bottle (it looks backwards, but it's the UK standard for safety—gas appliances use reverse threads). Tighten firmly, but don't overtighten or you'll damage the valve seat.

How to calculate runtime

Propane has ~12 kWh of energy per kg. A FinSteam Aurora 81 (8.1 kW) at full power consumes ~0.65 kg per hour.

Formula: Bottle weight (kg) × ×15 (assuming 65% usable gas; some remains in the bottle as vapor to maintain pressure) ÷ consumption rate (kg/hour) = runtime (hours).

Example: A 13 kg bottle holds ~13 kg. Usable propane: 13 × 0.65 = ~8.5 kg (conservative). At 0.65 kg/hour: 8.5 ÷ 0.65 = 13 hours at full power. With partial throttle (50% power = 0.33 kg/hour), runtime doubles to ~26 hours.

In practice, real users run at partial power after initial heat-up, so actual runtime is longer than the "full power" calculation.

For a typical 45-minute sauna session:

  • Heat-up: 15–20 minutes at full power (consumes ~0.17 kg)
  • Maintain: 25–30 minutes at 40–50% power (consumes ~0.10–0.15 kg)
  • Total per session: ~0.27–0.32 kg

At 0.30 kg per session, a 13 kg bottle (usable 8.5 kg) lasts ~28 sessions. At 3 sessions/week, that's ~9 weeks or just over 2 months. This matches real-world reports from UK sauna users.

Propane supply and swapping bottles

UK propane bottle suppliers (major chains):

  • Calor: Nationwide network. 13 kg bottles: ~£30–£35 exchange (you swap empty for filled). Delivery available for areas outside store coverage.
  • BOC: Similar pricing. Also offers exchange contracts and direct delivery for business customers.
  • Flogas: Regional availability (especially southern England). Competitive exchange rates.
  • Online (Amazon, etc.): 6 kg and some 11 kg bottles available for exchange/purchase. Prices vary; check return/exchange terms.

Typical swap process: Take your empty bottle to a supplier (most supermarkets partner with Calor; there's usually a bottle exchange near the front), hand it over, pay the exchange fee (~£25–£5 depending on size), leave with a full bottle. Takes 5 minutes. No deposit required if you're a regular exchanger.

Cost per session: At ~£2.50–£3.50 per kg (0.30 kg per session) = ~£75–£1.05 per session in fuel cost. (Add bottle depot/delivery fees if applicable; usually negligible.)

Safety considerations

  • Bottles stay upright and outside. Propane bottles must not be brought inside the sauna or heated enclosure. Keep them in the shade, away from direct sunlight (heat causes pressure buildup).
  • Check the bottle for damage or rust. A corroded or dented bottle should not be used. Return it to the supplier and exchange for a new one.
  • Leak testing. After connecting a new bottle, spray all connections (bottle valve, regulator, hose connections) with soapy water. Bubbles = leak. Tighten slightly or reseat the fitting.
  • Never refill a propane bottle yourself. Only certified filling stations can refill bottles. The "exchange" system (swap empty for filled) is the safe standard in the UK.
  • Storage. If you have a spare bottle at home, keep it upright, outdoors, in a cool, dry place (not in a shed with heat sources). A single 13 kg bottle in a domestic garden is safe and legal; multiple bottles (e.g., for a commercial sauna) require secure storage and may require local council notification.

Cost comparison: 12-month propane spend

Assuming 3 sauna sessions per week, 45 minutes each:

  • Annual sessions: 156
  • Annual consumption: ~47 kg propane
  • Cost at £2.50/kg: ~£118 in fuel
  • Bottle exchange/delivery: ~£60–£100 (rough, depending on supplier and distance)
  • Total annual propane cost: ~£178–£220

This is competitive with electric sauna running costs (~£1.60–£2.80 per session, or ~£250–£440 annually for 156 sessions). Propane is slightly cheaper per session and far more stable in price than grid electricity (which fluctuates with quarterly price caps).

Is propane a long-term fuel for UK saunas?

Yes. Propane is a mature fuel in the UK (used for heating, cooking, hot water, and BBQs in thousands of homes). There's no current plan to phase it out for domestic use. Bottle supply chains are stable, prices are predictable, and supply will remain available for the foreseeable future.
