Do you need an electrician for a home sauna? The UK answer

Short answer: a plug-in infrared cabin usually needs no new electrical work. A traditional electric stove sauna almost always does. The line between the two is a single number — 13 amps — and once you understand it, every sauna listing in the UK becomes easier to read. What it can't tell you is whether the socket and circuit in your room are up to the job. That one's for a qualified electrician.

The 13-amp line

A standard UK wall socket delivers up to 13 amps at 230 volts — roughly 3,000 watts. Appliances under that ceiling are designed to run from an ordinary plug, like a kettle (~3kW) or a washing machine. The difference with a sauna is duration: it pulls its load continuously for 30 to 45 minutes, so the socket and the circuit behind it need to be sound and not already carrying other heavy appliances. Anything above that 3,000-watt ceiling needs its own dedicated circuit from the consumer unit, installed by a qualified electrician.

Now the sauna numbers. Infrared cabins are modest draws: our Kajo range runs 1,200W (1-person), 1,900W (2-person) and 2,600W (3-person) — all under the ~3kW ceiling and supplied for a normal 13A plug. For scale, the Kajo 3 draws about 11.3A — inside the 13A limit, but not far inside it, so give it a socket to itself rather than sharing a circuit with a tumble dryer or an electric heater at the same time. Traditional electric sauna stoves are a different animal: 4.5–9kW is typical, one and a half to three times what a single socket can supply. That's why a stove sauna means a dedicated circuit and an electrician, and an infrared cabin generally doesn't.

What "no electrician" actually means in practice

For a Kajo-class cabin: unbox, assemble the panels, plug into a wall socket, switch on. Plugging an appliance into an existing socket isn't electrical installation work, so it doesn't bring in the building regulations that cover new or altered circuits — Part P in England and Wales, the Building Standards system in Scotland, and Northern Ireland's own Building Regulations. Adding a socket, or altering a circuit to suit the sauna, is a different matter, and that work belongs with an electrician registered to a competent person scheme such as NICEIC, NAPIT or ELECSA. If you're not certain the socket you have in mind is suitable for a sustained 2kW-plus load, ask one before you order.

A few things that aren't optional. Plug straight into a wall socket — never an extension lead, 4-way strip or cable reel; that's the manufacturer's instruction and standard advice for any appliance in this power bracket. Give the cabin the wall clearance the manual specifies. Don't run the sauna alongside another high-draw appliance on the same circuit. And if the wiring is old, or sockets run warm when the kettle's on, have an electrician check the circuit before you add a half-hour 2kW-plus load to it.

When you DO need the electrician

A hardwired stove sauna (indoor or outdoor). This means a new dedicated circuit, which is electrical installation work — notifiable under Part P in England and Wales, and covered by the equivalent regimes in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Use an electrician registered to a competent person scheme (NICEIC, NAPIT or ELECSA): they specify the circuit, cable and protective devices for your consumer unit and issue the certificate. Treat it as a real line in the budget, not a rounding error — and not a reason to avoid a traditional sauna if that's the experience you want.

A garden building with no power. If the sauna's going in a garden room that has no supply at all, getting armoured cable run out there is electrician work regardless of what you plug into it afterwards.

Bathrooms. UK wiring regulations treat bathrooms as special locations, with strict rules on where socket outlets may be installed relative to a bath or shower. Don't assume a bathroom will work: have a qualified electrician assess the room before you buy, whatever cabin you're considering.

The buying-page red flag

A product page should give you the wattage and the plug type. If a listing states neither, that's worth asking about before you buy — you can't plan a room around a spec nobody will give you. (Ours states it in the first line of the trust strip, because for most buyers it's the biggest practical question.) One thing that isn't a dodge: "check with your electrician".
